Photo album: - Lot 629

Photo album: SYLVESTRE photographe à Lyon (Jules Sylvestre 1859-1936). Rare and superb album devoted to the old Lyon district of Saint-Jean, circa 1900. Ninety-one silver prints, medium format 18 x 25 cm. All images are precisely captioned and bear an inventory number, suggesting that this album was the model album of the Sylvestre house, as corroborated by a label on the cover reading "vieux Lyon N°1 à 91" and the inventory numbers affixed to each page. Only the photographs numbered 43 and 43 bis are later prints. This is an extraordinary document, as many of the photographs show demolition or rehabilitation work in progress. Moreover, the quality of the architectural details and their meticulous framing make Sylvestre the Lyon equivalent of Atget. DV(Mottling on the mount boards). (old description sale of 30/05/2012 lot 713) Cover with some damage, foxing on page boards.
