FRENCH SCHOOL, circa 1820 The Bourbon hope Oil on canvas mounted on panel H. 40.5 cm L. 31.5 cm HVS Restorations, minor damage to frame. On the tomb of the Duc de Berry, assassinated in 1820, Hope nourishes the hopes of the French monarchy. It is the Duc de Bordeaux, "l'enfant du miracle" in Lamartine's words, who might be recognized here taking Hope's breast. For a comparable iconography, in which the Duc de Bordeaux takes the breast of Minerva, see a drawing from the Vinck collection held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de Franc (code RESERVE QB-370 (83)-FT4).
