Paris, Robert Estienne, 1536.
2 parts of [8]-168-[8]-203-[12] pages, in 1 volume in-4°, ivory vellum with covers (period binding).
First illustrated book by Robert Estienne, containing 3 texts by Lazare de Baïf dealing successively with naval art, clothing and vases among the ancients, as well as Antonio Telesio's famous treatise on colors.
The de RE NAVALI, dedicated to François 1er, is a treatise on ancient naval architecture and navigation, illustrated with 19 woodcuts showing different types of ships.
The de RE VESTARIA, dedicated to Jean de Lorraine, deals with the art of dressing in Rome, and is decorated with 3 costume figures.
The de VASCULIS, dedicated to Antoine de Bourges, deals with the decoration of vases; it is illustrated with 7 woodcuts, including 6 of large vases and ewers.
The final text is a short treatise on colors by the Italian poet and philosopher Antonio Telesio (1482-1534).
Five of the engravings are signed with the Lorraine cross, which may indicate an artist associated with G. Tory. A fine, very pure copy (USTC 147011) (Renouard, 44, no. 19) (Schreiber no. 53).
