(1545). CICERON. OFFICIA. - Lot 216
(1545). CICERON. OFFICIA.
Augsburg, Heinrich Steyner, November 3, 1545.
Gothic folio of [8]-91 leaves, empire green jansenist morocco, gilt inner lace, gilt edges (Louise Reymann).
Beautifully illustrated book, one of the most remarkable German books of the 16th century.
It contains 103 woodcuts, including the title and a fine portrait of the translator, Johann Schwarzenberg, after Durer. All these large woodcuts, identical to those in the original edition (1531), are by Johann Weiditz, 1 by Hans Burgkmair and 2 anonymous; 67 of them were engraved especially for this work, which was a huge success from the outset, and was published 3 times in the same year. A superb copy with fine margins, entirely washed and bound at the end of the 19th century by Louise Reymann.
From the Robert Hoe library with his bookplate (Cat. III, n°658) (Fairfax Murray, German, n°118) (USTC, 679486, 5 ex.) (Fléty, p.152).
