(1541). HOURS OF THE VIRGIN. HORAE IN LAUDEM BEATISSIMAE VIR - Lot 193

(1541). HOURS OF THE VIRGIN. HORAE IN LAUDEM BEATISSIMAE VIRGINIS MARIAE AD USUM ROMANUM. Paris, Olivier Maillard, 1541. In-12 of 176 uncounted leaves (A-Y8), stiff ivory vellum, smooth spine (period binding). Beautiful book of hours printed in round red and black letters, decorated on each page with various borders featuring flowers, fruit, animals, etc... NINETEEN FULL-PAGE FIGURES adorn the volume; they are particularly remarkable and all, except for one smaller one, come from the workshop of Geoffroy Tory, whose successor Olivier Maillard was. Some are arranged in pairs, facing each other, a process used by Tory in his heyday. Old restoration to spine, a very good copy. (Brunet V, 1660) (USTC 140204, 4 ex. wrong coll.).
