(1533). PLINE THE YOUNG. EPISTOLARUM LIB. X. Ejusdem Panegyr - Lot 151
(1533). PLINE THE YOUNG. EPISTOLARUM LIB. X. Ejusdem Panegyricus Trajano dictus. Cum commentariis Joannis Mariae Catanaei.
(Paris), Josse Bade and Jean de Roigny, January 1533.
In-folio of [8]-231 leaves, fawn calf, boards cold-stamped with character borders, title painted on the edge (period binding).
Pliny's letters offer a vivid description of the events of his time (the eruption of Vesuvius, the oppression of the peoples of Spain and Africa, etc.); in this edition, they are supplemented by the correspondence with Trajan. Meticulously printed by Josse Bade, with his own mark on the title, set in a remarkable baroque woodcut frame. The text is surrounded by commentaries by the Italian humanist Giovanni Maria Cattaneo, with numerous sifted-background lettering. Spine and corners roughly restored, stamp on title. Title creased, stains and light rings on 2 leaves, tear not missing on last 4 leaves, stamp on title. (USTC 187348, 2 copies).
