(1516). [PATRIZI DE PICCOLOMINI (Agostino.)]. RITUUM ECCLESI - Lot 77
(1516). [PATRIZI DE PICCOLOMINI (Agostino.)]. RITUUM ECCLESIASTICORUM, SIVE SACRARUM CERIMONIARUM S.SANCTAE ROMANAE Ecclesiae libri tres...
Venice, Gregorio de Gregori, November 21, 1516.
In-folio of 143-[6] leaves, boards covered with calligraphed antique parchment, painted edges (modern binding).
Rare first edition according to Brunet: The original manuscript was composed around 1488 by Agostino Patrizi de Piccolomini, secretary to Pius II and bishop of Pienza.
However, it was Cristoforo Marcello, bishop of Corfu, who published it in Venice in 1516 "without naming the author, but after having made falsifications to the text of the manuscript which aroused the attention of the cardinals and were referred to Pope Leo X, who ordered the suppression of the denounced book, which has made copies rare."
This important liturgical and ceremonial work was the most significant codification of papal ceremonies. This text, divided into 3 books and illustrated with 3 large woodcuts (9.5 x 12.5 cm), representing papal ceremonies, describes the rules of liturgy and court ceremonial.
The 6 table leaves have been bound at the end of the volume, with numerous old handwritten annotations, manicules and corrections. A pure copy with wide margins in fine condition, enriched by 2 manuscript pages dated 1528, with a 19th-century copy of the text (USTC, 819869) (Brunet III, 1396).
