(1513). LEFEVRE D'ETAPLES (J). LIBER TRIUM VIRORUM & TRI - Lot 59

(1513). LEFEVRE D'ETAPLES (J). LIBER TRIUM VIRORUM & TRIUM SPIRITUALIUM VIRGINUM. Paris, Henri Etienne and Jean de Brie, 1513. In-folio of [12]-190 leaves, demi-velin (19th century binding). First edition of this compilation of medieval mystical authors. It opens with a strikingly beautiful woodcut title showing the 6 authors of the books contained therein: The Shepherd of Hermas, the Scities of Hildegard, the Visions of Elizabeth of Schomau, the Visions of Huguetinus... The works of Saint Hildegard include the three books of visions known as the Scities. Born near Mainz in 1100, Hildegard was the prodigy of her century. At the behest of her director, although unable to write and completely ignorant of Latin, she wrote in that language the account of her revelations, recorded here. Smudging to the corners of the leaves and to the outer margins of the last 20 leaves, with repairs to 4 of them. Some handwritten annotations, 2 pages stained. (Renouard 14, n°2) (Schreiber n°16) (USTC, 180770,15 ex.).
