Protective scroll, Ethiopia. Parchment 170 x 8 cm, probably - Lot 11

Protective scroll, Ethiopia. Parchment 170 x 8 cm, probably late 19th, early 20th century This roll, made up of three sewn strips of skin, was worn in a cylinder by the person suffering from severe and recurrent disorders. It had to be the size of the person to protect them from head to toe. The scroll features three images, one at the top, one in the middle and one at the bottom, with the prayers between them, into which the recipient's baptismal name is inserted in red ink. The winged figure, brandishing his sword, is an angel. He threatens Satan's soldiers with his iron sword (Source: Le Roi Salomon et les maîtres du regard. Art et médecine en Éthiopie, RMN, 1992). Difficult to preserve, these scrolls are uncommon. Slight wear. AP
