[Finland, Lapland, Russia] - LAUVERGNE, Bathélemy (1805-1871 - Lot 568
[Finland, Lapland, Russia] - LAUVERGNE, Bathélemy (1805-1871), attributed to. Navigator, French naval painter.
Booklet of 81 drawings, size 297 X 420 mm, Italian style, some on double page, in cardboard (used) with, on the first cover, the name of B. Lauvergne in gold lettering.
The drawings, done in graphite (one partially watercolored), are dated and located with the day, month and place, accompanied by the year 1839, and much more rarely 1840 for many of them, a date that can be retained for the drawings as a whole.
Countries crossed: Swedish Lapland, Finland (the highest number of occurrences), Russia. Scenes of rural life, seascapes with fishing boats, sailboats, villages and panoramic views of towns, characters in Finnish costumes (colors sometimes specified), spinners, Ural Cossacks, nature with waterfalls, rivers. On several occasions, the artist takes up his subject a second time.
Numerous towns and villages are evoked: Kengis Bruk, Turtola, Mataringi, Uleaborg, Lovisa, Viborg, Women's Market in St. Petersburg (see the lithograph based on this painter's drawings, from the same angle, which appears in Paris, Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, or in the Atlas des Voyages en Scandinavie, en Laponie, au Spitzberg et aux Féroé)... Most of the sketches are finely executed.
In August 1839, Bathélemy Lauvergne joined the scientific commission in Norway aboard the corvette La Recherche. It was during this year, 1839, that he travelled through the regions described in his notebook, which is a remarkable testimony. AP
