Lots 100 to 117 come from a collection formed in Indochina b - Lot 99
Lots 100 to 117 come from a collection formed in Indochina by the current owner's grandparents and great-grandparents. Her great-grandfather, André Crochet, arrived in Tourane (Da Nang) in Annam in 1888 as an agent for Messageries Maritimes. His daughter, Juliette Crochet (grandmother of the current owner), born in 1894, lived with her parents in the kingdom of Luang Prabang (where her family met King Zakarine), then in Saigon in Cochinchina. In 1923, she married Philippe Oreste Renault (1881-1934), Director of Offices in the Cochinchina government and Prefect of Saigon. He was posted successively to Tan An, My Tho and Soc Trang, then to Saigon in 1927, where their daughter Françoise Renault (mother of the current owner of this collection) was born that same year. As a child, she visited Angkor with her parents. Philippe Renault died in Saigon on May 23, 1934. His widow, Juliette Renault, left Saigon for France in 1935 with her mother and daughter Françoise, along with the family collection. She sold a large part of the collection in France. The remaining works, sold here, have remained in the family ever since, passed on to the current owner by her grandmother and mother.
