At the Salon de Douai in 1811, under catalog no. 34, the artist exhibited a canvas described as follows: "This subject was painted by Artistides, a painter from Thebes. It shows a woman who, outside a besieged city, is dying from a stab wound to the breast. A child is near her, still at her breast, seeking life in the arms of its expiring mother."
Our work can be compared with a painting by the artist, of the same composition, sold in Paris, Maison de vente Pierre Bergé & Associés, lot July 10, 2009, lot 21.
