Two Nok heads, Nigeria - Lot 270
Two Nok heads, Nigeria
H. 20 cm
Provenance :
Former Michel Andrault collection
Set of two Nok faces.
Classically sculpted, the massive faces each have a different expression, but a similar impression of strength and power, in keeping with the importance of the figures represented, embodying high dignitaries.
The intense, steady gaze is accentuated by hollowed-out pupils with highlighted contours. The flared, pierced nostrils are characteristic of the style. The closed mouth confers an austerity. The face is topped by a horned headdress.
The second face is pensive and reflective. The eyes are tapered, almost wrinkled, with small, round pupils and fine, slightly raised eyebrows. From his flared nostrils, on either side, appear two raised continuities, probably indicating a moustache, his sophisticated headdress - a distinctive sign of his rank - composed of buns arranged at the top of the skull.
