Iatmul overmodelled skull
Resin and cowrie shell imprint, bone eyes
H. 20 cm
Provenance :
Former Michel Andrault collection
An ancient over-modeled skull featuring a face with hollow eyes and circular pupils decorated with bone. The closed mouth with its thin lips lends the skull a sense of restrained wisdom. Once over-modelled, the skull was attached to a mannequin called a rambaramb. This image of the deceased took part in a cycle of funeral ceremonies. The mannequin was then abandoned and the skull deposited in the House of Men (Meyer, 1995).
