Jean BARBAULT (Viarme, 1718 - Rome, 1762 ) - Lot 77
Jean BARBAULT (Viarme, 1718 - Rome, 1762 )
Lady in Venetian costume
Canvas mounted on cardboard
H. 26.7 cm - W. 19.5 cm ET
Frame: Louis XIV period carved and gilded wood frame
Our painting can be compared with the six known versions of Jean Barbault's La Vénitienne (one is in the
Musée Goya in Castres) depicted against a lagoon background. In a slightly different position, ours
is the only one to be situated on the terraferma. We're right in the Venetian mood, as the gallant in the background
gallant, in the background, wears a tricorne. However, the freshness of the brushstrokes and the light colors show
that we're dealing with a French painter who knows Subleyras and the young Vien. There is no evidence that
Barbault ever went to Venice. The fan and the little dog suggest that this is probably a courtesan.
