Köln, G. Calenius and J. Quentel Erben 1582.
2 parts of [6]-450 and 138 leaves in 1 large folio volume, brown calf stamped on wood, boards decorated with a large central cabochon and spandrels nailed and chased in copper at the corners, spine decorated with the same motifs as the boards, leather straps and copper clasps, red edges (period binding).
This famous "Anti-Lutheran" Bible in Johann Dietenberger's translation is the first German Catholic Bible printed in Europe; it was first published in 1534.
Its abundant illustration consists of 136 woodcuts (56 x 65 mm) scattered throughout the text, many of which bear the monogram VD, probably cut from illustrations by Solis for earlier biblical editions. The first title has been redrawn in pen, while that of the second part with its frame is present. Staining, margin repairs on a few leaves, 148 with missing letters, 348 torn but not missing. The binding is in fine condition. (Darlow/Moule 4211).
