(1556). BIBLIA SACRA... His adjecimus Hebraïcorum, chaldaeor - Lot 284
(1556). BIBLIA SACRA... His adjecimus Hebraïcorum, chaldaeorum, Graecorumque nominum interpretationem, cum indicibus copiosissimis. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1556. In-folio of [12]-660-[108] pages, brown calf, double cold framing, gilded Renaissance medallion in the center of the boards, gilded corner fleurons, ribbed spine (period binding). Third folio Bible given by de Tournes, preceded by the 1551 and 1554 editions. Printed on two columns, it is adorned with initials, vignettes and 188 ENGRAVED WOODEN FIGURES in the text, some of them full-page from the famous Petit Bernard suite. There are 120 for the Old Testament and 68 for the New. THIS BIBLE IS IN REALITY A PROTESTANT BIBLE, with all the trappings of the Vulgate; it reproduces the Olivétan version from the revised text of the so-called Sword Bible, published in Geneva in 1540 (cf. Cartier, 186). Window in title obliterating a bookplate. 2 vignettes (nude Adam and Eve) redacted at the time, stains and traces of wetness. Binding worn, corners and spine completely rebound (Cartier no. 384) (USTC, 151955).
