(1555). TYARD (Pontus de). SOLITAIRE SECOND OU PROSE DE LA M - Lot 278
(1555). TYARD (Pontus de). SOLITAIRE SECOND OU PROSE DE LA MUSIQUE.
Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1555.
In-4°, 160-[16] pages, red morocco, large gilt motif at center of covers, double gilt fillet, ornate ribbed spine, inner gilt lace, gilt edges (Hardy-Mennil).
This work is not, as one might think, a sequel to Solitaire premier, which contains mixed poems. Solitaire Second is a special treatise on music.
Dedication by Maurice Scève opposite a fine portrait of Pontus "engraved with remarkable breadth and suppleness by Petit Bernard" (Cartier) and a number of technical plates drawn by the author.
The fold-out plate contains a woodcut depicting the monochord, an instrument "Moyennant lequel, les consonnances différentes sont connues sur diferentes proporcions". Small light stains on the front cover, otherwise a fine copy, carefully bound in the taste of the period. Unidentified armorial bookplate. (Tchemerzine V, 892) (Cartier n°318) (Brunet V, 853) (USTC 39158).
