(1553). ROVILLE (G). PROMPTUARI ICONUM INSIGNIORUM A SAECULO - Lot 264
(1553). ROVILLE (G). PROMPTUARI ICONUM INSIGNIORUM A SAECULO HOMINUM. Lyon, G. Rovillium, 1553. 2 parts of [8]-172-[4] and 247-[1]-[7]-1bl. pages bound in 1 volume in-4°, blond calf, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (17th century binding). FIRST EDITION AND FIRST EDITION SET WITH 824 woodcut MEDALS. This promptuary, published simultaneously in French, Latin and Italian, begins with the portrait of Adam and Eve and continues with that of Henri II. All the finely engraved faces were largely executed by G. Reverdy and Cl. Corneille, with a smaller proportion according to Baudrier. Although the text remained anonymous for a long time, we can now affirm that it was written by Claude Rouillé, who was too modest to want anyone to know that he was the author. Small wormholes in the margins. (Baudrier IX, 204) (USTC 151373).
