(1552). [ERASMUS] - NOVUM TESTAMENTUM... ACCOMODIS ILLUSTRAT - Lot 258
(1552). [ERASMUS] - NOVUM TESTAMENTUM... ACCOMODIS ILLUSTRATUM. Paris, François Gryphe, 1552. Large in-16 volume of 396 leaves, lavaliere morocco (17th century binding). Attractive little edition illustrated with 97 woodcuts (63 x 45 mm) in the text, procured by Erasmus and printed by François Gryphe, Sébastien's brother. This would be the fifth edition, probably printed between 1542 and 1545 - despite the date indicated on the title - the previous editions dating, according to Mortimer (French, no. 70), from 1539 to 1542. The woodcuts are identical to the 1541 edition and attributed to the German engraver Hans Sebald Beham (1500-1550). Dark rings on the first 40 leaves, q. handwritten annotations, worn binding. (Mortimer French, n°70), (USTC 151170, 2 ex.) (Pettegrew, 57928).
