Edo, Republic of Benin, late 19th - early 20th c. - Lot 236
Edo, Republic of Benin, late 19th - early 20th c. Superb Edo internal-wing ceremonial bell from the ancient kingdom of Benin, made using the lost-wax technique. The handle depicts a bird with a long, curved beak, while the circumference of the body is adorned with feathers. A bird's head is embossed on the top of the bell, with an imposing beak and high crest, probably symbolizing a hornbill. The bell's flared bell provides a harmonious base. In sub-Saharan Africa, there is a special relationship between metallurgy and royalty. This large, exceptionally crafted bell bears witness to the courtly art that flourished in the ancient kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th century onwards. Bronze founders produced numerous pieces: ornamental plaques, royal heads, trumpets, bells, etc., under the authority of the Oba, the traditional king of this ancient kingdom. Lost-wax bronze. Height : 51 cm Weight : 3 kg Beautiful dark patina
