Chokwe, Angola, first half of the 20th century. - Lot 222
Chokwe, Angola, first half of the 20th century.
Interesting "Kakolodondo" sanza on board with 18 palmate tongues on two keyboards. The planchette is fitted with iron noisemakers. A hemispherical calabash serves as a resonance box, held to the board with cords. The musician places his hands on either side of the planchette, between it and the calabash. The tongues are pinched with the thumbs. The instrument is complete, often with only the board and tongues remaining. This lamellophone, collected in the 1950s in the Province of Lunda Norte in northeastern Angola, is in very good condition.
Dense wood, iron, calabash, hemp.
