[ENCYCLOPÉDIE].DIDEROT (D.) - ALEMBERT (J. LE ROND D'). Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers [...].
Livourne, De l'Imprimerie des Éditeurs, 1770-1779. 33 volumes in-folio, ivory vellum with flaps, red morocco title-piece, red edges (probably slightly later binding, probably Italian).
A counterfeit of the original edition of 1751-1772, produced in Livorno between 1770 and 1779, marked "Third Edition" and "Second Edition" for the 5 supplement volumes. Text: Livorno, 1770-1775 (volumes I to XVII) [17 vols.] Plates: Livorno, 1771-1778 (11 vols.) [vols. I to XII]. Supplement: Livorno, 1778-1779 (5 vols. [tomes I to V], including 4 text and 1 plate). Frontispiece portrait of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in medallion.
Copy complete with 3132 plates, according to the publishers' counting method (corresponding to the 2795 plates regrafted from the 1751 edition), many of them folded, some folded tables.
Counterfeit in 33 folio volumes. Presented as the third edition after the Paris edition of 1751-1772 and the Lucca reprint of 1758-1776, it is rarer than the first and, above all, the only one to have been reprinted with supplements.
The volumes are sometimes slightly foxed, with light rings. The major defects are listed below:
Text:
Volume II: slight tear at tail of binding
Volume III: wetness in the upper left-hand corner, partially affecting the text, with occasional early deterioration of the paper, more pronounced wetness on pp. 214-215. Minor restoration to upper part of binding.
Volume VI: tear not missing, p. 568
Volume XIV: mildew in upper inner margin, with slight damage to text.
Volume XV: mold in the lower margin without affecting the text, light foxing in a few sections. Lower spine of binding damaged and missing.
Volume XVI, bottom of spine damaged and missing. Small marginal worm gallery.
Volume XVII. Very slight mould at the bottom of the book, without affecting the text.
For the plates :
Volume VII: copy partly unbound, wetness in the upper part of the volume, in the inner margin. The plates are generally untouched, but the paper, affected by mildew, has a strong tendency to deteriorate in the inner margin.
Volume VIII: Minor restoration to spine of binding. Copy partly unbound, wetness in inner margin.
Volume VIII, Title, false-title and 254 plates, conforming to the tables. Rough restoration to spine. Copy partly unbound, spotting in inner margin, 1776
Volume IX: Minor restoration to upper spine. Mottling in the upper part of the volume, in the inner margin, with occasional slight damage to the plates, reinforced on the spine due to weakening or deterioration of the paper.
Plates Volume X: volume partly unbound, wetness in inner margin, reaching part of plates, with deterioration of paper, affected by mildew, upper part of vellum slightly stained.
Volume XI: volume partly unbound, wetness in inner margin, affecting some of the plates, with deterioration of the paper, affected by mildew, upper part of vellum slightly stained, damaged cap.
The 5 supplement volumes, 4 for the text, 1 for the plates, are in good condition. AP
