Diamond-ring damask, Medici emblem, Italy, first half of the - Lot 340
Diamond-ring damask, Medici emblem, Italy, first half of the 16th century, green silk damask decorated with a flowering, leafy pomegranate with a faceted diamond-ring motif inscribed on an ogival network of foliage garlands ringed with fleurdelys crowns, 110 x 27 cm.
This well-documented diamond-ring damask appeared in the early 16th century and is associated with the Medici family. Similar variations exist, but its decoration and wide distribution in the 16th century suggest that other important families may have used it to decorate church choirs and palaces for weddings.
Related work: a similar damask in the same shade is in the Metropolitan Museum.
