Velvet fashioned as a faithful replica of an emblematic earl - Lot 339
Velvet fashioned as a faithful replica of an emblematic early 15th-century Italian velvet, late 19th century, triple-cut velvet, coral satin ground, Oriental-influenced decoration of sinuous flowering lianas with scalloped leaves, 138 x 66 cm.
The Musée des tissus de Lyon holds an original document of this fabric (Cat.30.MT23884). Iconography testifies to the fabric's popularity in the early 15th century, notably on the tomb of the Coscia family of Florence at San Lorenzo, and on that of antipope John XXIII at the Florence Baptistry, sculpted by Donatello and Michelozzo di Bartolomeo.
