Melanesia, Ambrym Island, Vanuatu - Lot 270
Melanesia, Ambrym Island, Vanuatu Grade figure known as "Malakula Vanuatu" representing a zoomorphic figure, carved from a tree fern trunk 20th century H. 210 cm Brought back after a mission from the Musée Tjibaou in Nouméa The Figures de Grades take their name from the tree ferns in which they are carved. They confer on the men who carve them, their rank within their chiefdom. The man who prepares his Grade Figure does so out of sight, in the very place where the tree fern is cut. For this reason, Grade Figures are considered important customary objects on the island of Ambrym, in Melanesia.
