Oromo/Galla shield, Ethiopia - Lot 156
Oromo/Galla shield, Ethiopia Late 19th century Leather and geometric brass nails D. 23 cm Provenance : Galerie Oriental Arms #9875, Haiffa IS, June 17, 2009. A round shield with a central protuberance. A succession of concentric circles decorate the surface, on which are fixed two brass four-pointed star emblems. The formal origin of this type of shield remains uncertain. For some researchers, such as Dieter Plaschke and Manfred Zirngibl, these shields are indeed Oromo, while other theories place their creation in Oman or Saudi Arabia. This confusion may be explained by the close relations maintained over the centuries between the Oromo and the Arabs.
