Idoma coinage, Nigeria - Lot 152
Idoma coinage, Nigeria 19th - early 20th century Wrought iron H. 75.5 cm This coin, nicknamed akika by the Idoma people, features remarkable forging, the iron bar having been hammered and flattened, producing a work of finesse and elegance. The stem, which flares out at the end, is extended by a triangular shape derived from the hoe, lending minimalism and abstraction to this geometric sculpture with its modern touch. This type of coin was used for ceremonies and family negotiations related to the bride's wealth.
