Zulu hat, South Africa - Lot 148
Zulu hat, South Africa 19th - early 20th century Hair, red pigment D. 51.5 cm This traditional isicholo bride's headdress takes the form of a disk with a sunny, flamboyant aesthetic. The rattan structure is covered with hair enhanced with red ochre pigments, a color associated with beauty and femininity. While the shape of the isicholo has evolved over time, the circular hat being an extension of a traditional conical headdress worn in the nineteenth century, the stakes remain the same: to reflect and affirm the public status of married women. The black dot in the center of the hat indicated the social status of its owner.
