Osele Kota knife, Gabon - Lot 137
Osele Kota knife, Gabon Metal, brass H. 30 cm This type of knife was called osélé or musélé among the Kota and onzil among the Fang, who used it with a long handle. Among other things, it was used for circumcision rites linked to the mungala cult among the Kota. With one side flat and the other domed, it probably derives from throwing knives. Its dynamic, slender shape is rendered by the curvature of its upright shaft, decorated with fine engravings, some of which have been faded by time and use. The curves are regular and elegant. The rear spur runs up the axis of the lower end of the blade, closing the back of the knife and giving it even more momentum. The blade is blackened in places, enhancing the overall relief effect. The wooden handle is encircled by spiral-coiled bands of iron and brass, and the end cone is also in brass.
