Dogon toguna post, Mali - Lot 108
Dogon toguna post, Mali Wood H. 185 cm Hut pillars are architectural elements used in community structures called Toguna, small central buildings in the village dedicated to rest and debate. Eight posts traditionally support the structure, a sacred number in Dogon cosmogony referring to ancestral lineage and the creation of the world. Our object features a long, vertical base whose end unfurls into a characteristic fork, the stylized, organic and irregular "Y" shape referring to the Nommo's symbolic gesture of supplication with raised arms to the supreme god Amma.
