Bangwa zoomorphic figure, Cameroon - Lot 100
Bangwa zoomorphic figure, Cameroon Wood H. 13 cm - L. 57 cm The sculptural power is expressed on a horizontal plane, ensuring stability for the protective zoomorphic effigy in the guise of a crocodile, whose significance is reinforced by the partially eroded patina of the wood, exalting its sacred, archaic character. Spiritual strength resides in the abdomen, as evidenced by the small lateral openings in the animal's body for the insertion of magical charges. Behind the apparent tranquility provided by the effigy's immobility on sturdy legs, the animal-like character is expressed through the treatment of the back, engraved with scales in relief, but above all the face, sculpted as an extension of the body, frozen in a ferocious expression dominated by a wide-open jaw with sharp fangs, large pointed ears and small exorbitant eyes. For a stylistically similar crocodile sculpture, once owned by Merton Simpson.
