Anga hoe coin, Jos Plateau region, Nigeria - Lot 84
Anga hoe coin, Jos Plateau region, Nigeria 19th - early 20th century Wrought iron H. 70 cm - L. 48.5 cm Bibliography : Roberts C. Allen, Joyce Tom, Berns C. Marla, Striking Iron, The Art of African Blacksmiths, cat.exp. (Paris, Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, November 19, 2019 - March 29, 2020), 512 pages, 2019. In addition to the symbolic and pecuniary value of this monumental wedding coin, there is the aesthetic dimension of the object, whose modernity and purity of form bear witness to the plastic inventiveness of the Anga and Afo blacksmiths. If these craftsmen concentrated all their talent and virtuosity in making such objects, it's because art, craftsmanship and know-how have often enabled an object to be accepted as currency. A vertically protruding handle emerges from the end of the forged hoe-shaped blade, and the surface of the object has a beautiful grainy patina of use. Through these formal and symbolic references to the agricultural world, hoe-coins also conveyed intrinsic values to the bride-to-be, linked to her power to work and reproduce within the household.
