Paddle, Solomon Islands - Lot 78
Paddle, Solomon Islands Late 19th - early 20th century Wood H. 199 cm Provenance : Alexandre Bernand Collection, Paris, France Inscribed within an elongated, flattened ellipse, subtly tapering at both ends, this paddle schematizes with purity and minimalism a face whose gaze is signified by two plunging lines meeting towards a triangular shape divided into three parts constituting its nose. The flattened surface of the paddle's shaft is continuous with the lower body of a figure with folded arms reaching for the sky. The brown patina in the center features lovely nuanced tones ranging from ochre to off-white. A sculptural testimony to the minimalism, purity and inventiveness of Solomon Islands artists.
