Boomerang, Central Australia - Lot 70
Boomerang, Central Australia Early 20th century Wood H. 63 cm The origins of the boomerang in Australia date back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the presence of 20,000-year-old depictions of war boomerangs on rock paintings, or the discovery of millennia-old fragments of throwing sticks in South Australia dating back 10,000 years. With its simple, pure form, the boomerang takes us back to the origin of Creation, to Dreamtime and its mythological aboriginal tales. Boomerangs, thrown by ancestors into the earth, formed rivers and mountains, animated by a vital, creative energy that can be likened to a symbolic big-bang. The graceful, flattened, angular form of our object is enhanced by the shiny patina that reveals the traces of the tool that shaped it. The boomerang is a clear link with the history and homeland of the Aborigines, whose uses are manifold: a tool for hunting and fishing, a lethal combat weapon, a household accessory for making fire, and even a ceremonial percussion instrument.
