Masai shield, Kenya - Lot 63
Masai shield, Kenya Skin, wood, pigments H. 105 cm Provenance : Galerie Maine Durieu, Paris, France Elongo warrior shield (from el-longo meaning shield in the Maasai language), oval-shaped, in leather painted in red, brown, black and white. The motifs on Maasai shields, called sirata - here in the shape of a large rosette or sun - correspond to rank markings that identify the wearer's status and age. Shades of color play with the irregular surface of the shield, accentuating the subtle optical effects of color, material, relief and depth. A very fine example.
