Dogon statue, Mali - Lot 43
Dogon statue, Mali Wood H. 71 cm Provenance : M. Labrowsky Collection, Lyon, France Private collection, Madrid, Spain Published by: Montagut Gallery. Hogon. Barcelona, 2018. pp. 97-99-125. "One of the most convincing features of Dogon statuary is the importance given to gesture. Indeed, what the eye immediately grasps is as much the density of a narrative message of the highest spirituality perfectly enunciated through the forms as the precision of the attitudes that give their tension to the subjects. This implies that the work, from a plastic point of view, concentrates on an essential movement". (Dapper, 2002) Gestural gestures visually convey the extension in space of this superb, elongated female figure. Dynamics and rhythms, rendered by a formal tension associated with contrasting planes and volumes between the body's limbs. The curvature of the hips and calves cleverly contrasts with the linearity of the straight, disproportionately elongated bust. The gentle roundness of the top of the skull contrasts with the angular rigor of the strictly demarcated shoulders. The face is conical, with a clearly defined jawline. The eyes are subtly framed by a plunging triangle that follows the shape of the nose. Beautiful and intriguing formal repetition between the nose and the gestures of the hands grouped together to form a triangle. The headdress is sophisticated and architectural, composed of a juxtaposition of stretched oval shapes. A beautiful crusty patina in places, notably on the face and at the birth of the breasts, bears witness to the many libations she was honored with and the imprint of time.
