Chokwe stool, Democratic Republic of Congo - Lot 27
Chokwe stool, Democratic Republic of Congo Wood H. 16 cm Provenance : Guy Van Rijn Collection, Brussels, Belgium The Tchokwé people are reputed to have developed a highly refined courtly art, enabling them to illustrate and consolidate their notoriety, but also to make it shine through their highly technical creativity. Superb geometric or figurative decorations adorn pipes, snuffboxes, musical instruments, scepters and ceremonial spears. Chairs and stools were exclusively reserved for important chiefs and notables (Bastin,1982, fig.176). While stools with a seated figure in the round, legs bent and arms supporting the face are common in this corpus, it is much rarer to see an animal, as on this fine example. The bovid's face is particularly meticulous, with its eyes in incised relief accentuating its expressiveness, while its horns and rump support the circular base. The superb deep-brown patina matches the softness of the rounded forms.
