^ Jean BARBAULT (Viarme, 1718 - Rome, 1762 ) - Lot 296
^ Jean BARBAULT (Viarme, 1718 - Rome, 1762 )
Lady in Venetian costume
Canvas mounted on cardboard
H. 26,7 cm - L. 19,5 cm ET
Frame: carved and gilded wood frame from the Louis XIV period
Our painting can be compared to the six known versions of the Venetian by Jean Barbault (one is in the
Goya museum in Castres) represented on a lagoon background. In a slightly different position, ours
is the only one to be situated on the terraferma. We are well in the Venetian atmosphere since the
gallant, in the background, wears a tricorn. However, the freshness of the touch and the light coloring show
that we are dealing with a French painter who knows Subleyras and the young Vien. There is no evidence that
Barbault went to Venice. The fan and the little dog suggest that it is probably a courtesan.
