[Navigation]-Floquet, J. A.- - Lot 146
[Navigation]-Floquet, J. A.- Canal de Provence ou Canal d'Aix et de Marseille. Paris, Le Mercier, 1750; in-8°(6) 170 pp. in red morocco, smooth spine richly ornamented and gilded, gilded fillet on the edges, arms stamped in the center of the boards, double gilded fillet framing, gilded roulette inside, gilded edges (period binding). Beautiful folding engraved map. Ex libris Henri Bonnasse. One corner slightly dulled, slight wear, otherwise a fine, rare copy. The hydraulic project to divert the waters of the Durance to supply Aix and Marseille proved to be ruinous, and led to its designer's imprisonment. The project was completed two centuries later. Unidentified coat of arms. The attribution to the chancellor Maupeou, by the bibliophile who left a card inside the work, cannot be retained, as the representation does not offer any certainty (OHR, tome XXII, cites other coats of arms with the spicy pig emblem). The hydraulic project to divert the waters of the Durance to supply Aix and Marseille proved ruinous, and led to the designer's imprisonment. The project was completed two centuries later. AP
