By D.A.F. Sade, author of Aline et Valcour. Paris, Massé, year VIII (1800). 4 volumes of [6]-47-1bl.-228 ; [6]-274 ; [6]-256 ; [6]-245-[1] pages, half ruby morocco with corners, spine decorated with gilt fleurons, gilt edges (Niédrée) VERY RARE ORIGINAL EDITION, with four unsigned intaglio frontispieces, printed before the letter. It is a collection of short stories where Love always appears as the first and major cause of crimes that stain the earth; these short stories are preceded by an "Idea on novels" in which Sade defends himself from being the author of the libertine works that are attributed to him, drawing a very personal picture of the history of the novel from Antiquity to his contemporaries. Between various comments on Voltaire, Rousseau, Crébillon, Madame de La Fayette, Richardson, Marivaux, Scarron, l'Abbé Prévost or Restif de la Bretonne, this little treatise, enamelled with advice to young writers, answers several questions on the origin and the meaning of the novel and demonstrates why it must paint vice in order to teach virtue to the readers. Small marginal repair to the corner of one leaf, the copy is in fine condition, finely bound by Edouard Niédrée (Gay I, 760) (Cohen. 530-31) (Apollinaire p. 59).
