[LA SALLE (Antoine de). The History and pleasant cronicle of - Lot 174
[LA SALLE (Antoine de). The History and pleasant cronicle of little Jehan de Saintré, of the young Lady of the Beautiful Cousins without other name. Paris, chez Guillaume Saugrain, 1724. 3 volumes in-12, old red morocco, gilded fillets on the boards, spine with ornate nerves, gilded edges on marbling (binding of the time). Edition given by Gueulette containing a preface on the origin of chivalry and ancient tournaments. Published for the first time in 1517 by Antoine de La Salle, this charming and somewhat cruel tale mixes chivalry novel and fabliau. It shows a young widow giving a young page of the king a worldly, chivalrous and sentimental education. A few stains on the boards, the copy is well preserved in beautiful contemporary morocco bindings (Barbier II, 804, does not cite this edition - Gay II, 562). Provenance: Library of the Boscary de Villeplaine family (engraved bookplate and the motto Amor patriae).
