LA PORTE (J. de) - LACROIX (J. de). Literary history of Fren - Lot 172
LA PORTE (J. de) - LACROIX (J. de). Literary history of French women or historical and critical letters. Paris, Lacombe, 1769. 5 volumes in-8, marbled calf, triple gilt fillet on the boards, smooth spine decorated with stylized flowers around which curved branches are intertwined, gilt arms on the tail with the motto "Boutez en Avant" (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION decorated with a beautiful frontispiece drawn by de Sève, engraved by Prévost. Important work on all the women who left a name in the Letters, from Héloïse and Louise Labé to Mlle de Milly, passing by the immortal Queen of Navarre, Mme de Sévigné, Mme de Tencin and many others. Copy with the coat of arms of Jean du Barry, lover then brother-in-law of the famous favorite of Louis XV. Jean du Barry, known as le Roué, a small pimp of the neighborhood, a drinker, a gambler and a womanizer, had usurped the names and arms of the Irish family du Barry de Buttevant, inspired by a conformity of name. "It was he who had the famous Countess du Barry, his mistress, presented to the Court in 1769, after having had her married by his brother Guillaume" (O.H.R.). The rare volumes having belonged to Jean du Barry and bearing his irons (drawn for him by Gravelot), were catalogued and sold in the 19th century as books with the arms of the Favorite. Small worm work on a spine otherwise a fine copy. (Barbier II, 814 - O.H.R., pl. 656). Provenance: Copy with the Arms of Jean du Barry.
