CHARTREUX (Statutes of the). Statuta Ordinis Cartusiensis a domino Guigone priore cartusie edita. Basel, Johann Amerbach, February 18, 1510. In-folio of 313 leaves, gothic characters, red morocco, gilt flets on the boards with large arms in the center, ribbed spine decorated in the grotesque style, gilt edges (binding of the XVIII°). ORIGINAL EDITION OF A LEGENDARY RARETY: Indeed, as early as 1764, de Bure, in his bibliography, indicates on this subject: "This rarity came from the fact that the Carthusian monks had most of the copies withdrawn from the trade and that this work is becoming even rarer by the day. This volume contains at the end a prohibition to communicate this work to anyone, neither directly nor indirectly. This first printed compilation of the Statutes of the Carthusian order founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno was procured by Joannes Amerbach, printer and bookseller in Basel. It is here complete with all that has appeared, that is, with the last folio containing the Privileges, which is the rarest and usually missing. The illustration consists of 5 large woodcuts and 33 smaller ones, all colored at the time. The text entirely ruled in red ink, sign of the first edition, is embellished with hundreds of small and large gouache lettering in red and blue, sometimes with arabesques. 1st part : ORIGIN AND STATUTES PROPERLY SAID OF GUIGUES. 25 leaves and 1 blank including a plate of 9 woodcuts in colors representing episodes of the life of Saint Bruno. They are attributed to the Basel artist Urs Graf. Part 2: OLD STATUTES OF THE ORDER. 106 leaves including a color plate representing Saint Bruno, surrounded by a Virgin and Child and Saint John the Baptist with a lamb, from the side of which comes a tree, each flower of which is a successor of Bruno in the Cartusian order. 3rd part: NEW STATUTES OF THE ORDER. 54 leaves including 2 plates in colors with (Guillaume Raynaud preaching and a second one representing François Dupuy teaching). 4th part : REPERTOIRE DES STATUTS. 66 unnumbered leaves. 5th part: PRIVILEGES OF THE ORDER AND LIST OF ALL THE HOUSES RANKED BY PROVINCE. 11 unnumbered leaves and 50 numbered leaves including a plate of the genealogical tree of Saint Bruno (identical to the one in the second part) but surrounded by 17 small woodcuts showing the Popes who confirmed the order, all in color. COPY IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, THE COLORS OF THE WOOD ARE STILL BRIGHT. Small wormholes, without gravity. (Brunet II, 1814) (Adams G, 1559) (USTC 694589, incomplete). This copy comes from the sale of the library of Girardot de Préfond (n°203 (Ex. in calf) of the cat. of his sale. P., de Bure, 1757), then would have been acquired by the Duke of Lavallière in 1768 who had it bound in red morocco (Catalogue, Tome 1, 1768 n°1183), then resold by de Bure in 1838 (n°132 of the cat. of the books of the Bure frères' bookshop, 10 January 1838. P. 4th part. (ex. de Prefond) to Baron Guillaume Pavée de Vandoeuvre (1779-1870) who had his coat of arms affixed to the boards.
