Coptic cross, Ethiopia - Lot 163
Coptic cross, Ethiopia Metal H. 30,5 cm Provenance : Paul and Jacqueline Canfère collection acquired from Jean-Michel Huguenin (according to oral information from descendants). The very expression of the refinement of Ethiopian craftsmen. To the spiritual symbolic importance of the cross, responds the aestheticism achieved, the fineness of details, the high degree of technicality. Ethiopia, cradle of one of the oldest orthodox theologies, where the first crosses appeared around 400 AD. If three types of crosses are referenced according to their use, this one by its mouth, and the subtle fineness of its details openwork in the metal, indicates that it was a processional cross, fixed at the end of a staff, carried by priests and deacons during services.
