*Massue sali, Fiji Islands - Lot 132
*Massue sali, Fiji Islands L. 104 cm Provenance : Private collection, Switzerland The harmonious forms of this Fijian club would have been inspired by the elegance of the flowers of the sali plant, from the banana family. The Europeans, on the other hand, favored the prosaic over the poetic and likened it to a rifle butt. The handle, slightly curved, flares out in its upper part to form the blade, decorated with embossed motifs interspersed with linear bands in champlevé. A sharp edge, in the shape of a shark's spur, boldly rises along the blade, its edges showing a lighter patina tone attesting to its repeated use. Underneath this highly decorative appearance with its clean and balanced forms, this wartime puzzle had the function of slicing and breaking the bones of the opponent during close combat. The brown patina attests to its age. This lot is temporarily imported and is subject to a 5.5% buyer's fee in addition to the selling expenses and the hammer price.
