*Statue, Admiralty Islands, Papua New Guinea - Lot 119
*Statue, Admiralty Islands, Papua New Guinea H. 30 cm Provenance : Bailly Collection, Geneva Swiss private collection Although the Admiralty Archipelago is composed of some forty islands, the most important of which is Manus, the main artistic center is on the island of Matankor. The population of Matankor, probably of Micronesian origin, made vessels, drums, charms and statuettes for their neighbors. The beautiful honey-colored patina with brown shades is matched by the softness of the figure's curves. Proudly camped on a small circular pedestal with a decorative frieze of finely engraved motifs around the edge. Massive bust, imposing, seemingly bulging, animated by a slightly incised wavy line, drawing from one shoulder to the other the shape of a pectoral necklace on his chest. From the rounded shoulders, fine arms are born, the hands delicately signified by triangular fingers, are placed on either side of the hips. Particular care is given to the anatomical details, nipples, umbilicus of circular forms. The face in a concentric oval is enlivened by a clever play of planes, between the rounded forehead and the hollowed lower part. A pretty nose with flattened hemmed nostrils, announces a small mouth sketching a smile. This lot is temporarily imported and is subject to a 5.5% fee payable by the buyer in addition to the sale costs and the hammer price.
