Toma, Liberia - Lot 115
Toma, Liberia Wood H. 35 cm Provenance : Paul and Jacqueline Canfère collection acquired from Jean-Michel Huguenin (according to oral information from descendants). This mask, with its surprisingly cubist lines, was called bakorogi by the Toma people. The face has a domed hemispherical forehead, surmounted by circular eyes whose contour is surrounded by metal strips, separated by a long, busted nose. These characteristics are the sign of the male gender. The angular cheekbones contribute to the sculptural dynamics of the object. The bakorogi mask was used, among other types of masks, during the initiation stages of the Poro brotherhood. A "guide-interpreter" accompanied this type of mask, which could react in a very violent and aggressive manner.
