ELEGANT "MIDDLE" SLATTED DESK BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS HACHE - Lot 63
ELEGANT "MIDDLE" SLATTED DESK BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS HACHE H. 104 ; W. 164,5 ; D. 95 cm - side pulls : 74 x 78,5 cm each Provenance: private collection Bibliography : Le génie des Hache, P. et F. Rouge, Faton 2005, described p.494 ; and one other model with p. 495. FANTASY AND FUNCTIONALITY OF JEAN-FRANÇOIS HACHE This model corresponds to the first form of the cylinder desk, known as the "moving slat desk," which appeared around 1760, with the slats held in place by a cloth glued to the reverse. These blades are veneered alternately with walnut, acacia and plum, forming a geometric decoration full of fantasy where the veins of the walnut harmonize with those of the acacia, and set the red and blond tones of the plum tree. On a cherry wood frame, this so-called "middle" desk is veneered on all sides with a geometric decoration of ovals enclosing blond and red sycamore burls, and rectangular reserves, veneered with brown stained beech leaves, and punctuated with ebony pastilles. The side cabinets open to two rows of drawers in the front, around a central space without drawers, typical of the Hache's concern for the comfort of the user, who also has two side pulls to enlarge the work surface. Only one other model "à lamelles" by Jean-François Hache is known (ibidem, p. 495), with the same structure and also resting on four curved legs ending with sabots. Stamped HACHE FILS IN GRENOBLE, label V. Jean-François HACHE (1730-1796), circa 1769-1771 Good condition. Expert : Françoise ROUGE, expert at the Court of Appeal of Paris, +33 (0)6 03 93 23 76
