ROUILLE (G). PROMPTUARI ICONUM INSIGNIORUM A SAECULO HOMINUM - Lot 194
ROUILLE (G). PROMPTUARI ICONUM INSIGNIORUM A SAECULO HOMINUM. Lugduni, G. Rovillium, 1553. 2 parts of [8]-172-[4] and 247-[1]-[7]-1bl. pages, in 1 vol. in-4°, half red calf, spine decorated with rocaille irons (19th century binding). FIRST EDITION AND FIRST ISSUE decorated with 824 woodcut MEDALS. This promptuary starts with the portrait of Adam and Eve to that of Henri II, and all the finely engraved faces, were executed in great part by G. Reverdy and Cl. Corneille for a smaller part, according to Baudrier. If the text remained anonymous for a long time, one can affirm today that it is due to Claude Rouillé, who too modest, did not wish that one knew that he was the author. (Baudrier IX, 204). Damage to the binding with lacks, wear, light wetness, page 239 has a hole with several letters missing. This copy would have belonged to the famous mathematician Jerome Cardan (1501-1576) (Handwritten bookplate at the bottom of the title "Hieronymo Borsaerio Hier. Cardanus I.V.D.").
